Notable Members of the National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) was established in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The first chapter began at Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, under the vision of principal Edward S. Rynearson. Today, NHS recognizes over one million students who excel in scholarship, service, and leadership. For over a century, NHS has provided scholarships and guidance to several notable and distinguished Americans.

Fred Rogers, better known as Mr. Rogers, was born in Pennsylvania and attended Latrobe High School between 1942 and 1946. He was a member of several school clubs in addition to the National Honor Society, including the debate team and student council. He went on to complete a music degree at Rollins College, during which time he became interested in television and how it could be used to foster a love of learning in young viewers. Misters Rogers’ Neighborhood, the Peabody Award-winning children’s program, launched in 1968 and ran until 2001.

Katie Couric is another television personality who spent time as a member of the National Honor Society. Her other high school activities ranged from cheerleading to writing for the school newspaper. The Arlington, Virginia native interred at the Washington, DC, news radio station WAVA, then filled multiple roles at The Cavalier Daily at the University of Virginia. Shortly after the start of her broadcasting career in 1979, an NBC executive declared that he never wanted to see Couric on the air again. More than four decades later, Couric remains a leading journalist and the head of her multimedia news and production company.

Notable athletes, including former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, have also taken part in NHS. He balanced his academics with baseball and football. After graduating, he was offered a contract by the New York Mets but decided to attend the University of Oklahoma and pursue a career in football. Aikman excelled in college and enjoyed an illustrious professional career with three Super Bowl championships and six Pro Bowl selections. He was named NFL Man of the Year in 1997.

Various members of the entertainment industry have been members of NHS. Meryl Streep is one of only six actors to win three or more Academy Awards for acting. She attended Bernards High School in New Jersey, followed by a fine arts program at the Yale School of Drama. Tina Fey, meanwhile, is one of the most accomplished head writers in the history of Saturday Night Live. In addition to her time as a writer and Weekend Update anchor, the Upper Darby High School graduate has created and starred in projects such as Mean Girls and 30 Rock.

Finally, the National Honor Society has counted several United States politicians among its ranks, including President Gerald Ford. The University of Michigan alum attended Grand Rapids South High School. In addition to NHS, he was a member of the Student Council, Latin Club, and several sports teams. His achievements as president included cutting the national inflation rate by more than 50 percent and generating more than four million new jobs during a recession.
